Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Films have long been recognized as powerful tools for educating and influencing public awareness on critical issues. Reproductive health, particularly for women, is an important topic that affects health outcomes and quality of life. In rural areas like Dambatta Local Government Area, Kano State, access to formal education and health services can be limited, making films an essential medium for disseminating important information (Olanrewaju & Yusuf, 2023).

Films that highlight reproductive health issues such as family planning, maternal health, and sexual rights have the potential to reach a wide audience in these areas. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of films in educating rural women in Dambatta about reproductive health.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

In rural areas, many women lack awareness and access to reproductive health education, which can lead to poor health outcomes. Despite the availability of health campaigns, the role of films in improving reproductive health knowledge has not been adequately studied in areas like Dambatta. This research aims to assess how effective films are in bridging this gap and increasing awareness on reproductive health topics.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the content of films that focus on reproductive health and their relevance to rural women.
  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of these films in educating women on reproductive health in Dambatta Local Government Area.
  3. To explore the impact of film-based education on women’s health behaviors and decision-making regarding reproductive health.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What reproductive health topics are commonly covered in films targeted at rural women?
  2. To what extent have these films improved knowledge of reproductive health among women in Dambatta Local Government Area?
  3. How have the films influenced women’s reproductive health decisions and behaviors in Dambatta?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Films focused on reproductive health significantly improve awareness and knowledge among rural women in Dambatta Local Government Area.
  2. Exposure to reproductive health films influences women’s decision-making and behavior related to family planning and maternal health.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will contribute to understanding the role of films in promoting reproductive health education in rural communities. The findings will provide valuable insights for policymakers, filmmakers, and health educators on how to leverage films as a tool for health awareness.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on women in Dambatta Local Government Area, Kano State, and will assess the impact of films in the area of reproductive health. Limitations may include cultural differences in the reception of films and variations in women’s access to the films.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
